Peterborough Is Now a Hot Retirement Destination

Peterborough Ontario is a hot news item since the recent figures were released from Stats Canada on May 10, 2012. Close to one in five Peterborough residents was age 65 and older in 2011, which means the ratio of seniors at 19.5 percent, is the highest of municipalities across Canada. Trois-Rivieres, PQ next at 19.4 percent is followed closely by Kelowna, BC, St. Catharines, ON and Victoria, BC.

Why is Peterborough so attractive to seniors?

Residents attribute the quality of life and the laid back feel of the community of just short of 120,000 people, as high on the list of draws to the city. Peterborough is gateway to Ontario’s Cottage Country, specifically the beautiful Kawartha Lakes where outdoor recreation and adventure are only minutes from home.

Director of Community and Services Ken Doherty comments that they are working to ensure the city is equipped with services seniors need and want such as accessibility to public transit, affordable housing and regional healthcare. Seniors’ Summits have become annual events where top priority is given to matching the needs of seniors with local merchants and service providers.

Using Elliot Lake as an example of a city transformed from a dying ghost town to an economically thriving seniors’ community, Peterborough leaders are working toward building their own profile as a model city of opportunity for both young and old.

Denise Cloutier, professor at the University of Victoria’s Centre for Aging, in looking at how well young families and seniors’ of Victoria have integrated, says that there’s a push in Canada and the world toward making communities accommodating to healthy adults. She says communities that are good for older adults tend to be better communities for everyone as they accommodate all ability levels. Cloutier adds that many large cities are still falling short in the area of providing services for the most frail of seniors; we need to be increasing the focus on providing a full continuum of care.
